Woman’s Figure and Body Shape: The Hourglass Figure – Sexy Or Not?

Marilyn Monro, Jane Mansfield, Ava Gardner, Bettie Page… Gina Lollobrigida, Sofia Loren, Raquel Welch… Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian, Mayra Veronica, Yasmin Bleeth, Kelly Brook, Salma Hayek…
These gorgeous women are fine examples of an hourglass body shape. They are endowed with waist-hip differential, and have narrow waist, fairly large and round ass and breasts. Marilyn Monroe and Sofia Loren were so proud of their figures that they wore dresses a size too small to accentuate the curves and narrow waist. Many women are proud of their hourglass contours and many other women dream of having such figures and strive to create the hourglass look by using various body-modification methods and wearing breast-lifting bras and, of course, corsets.
An hourglass figure… It is one of the sexiest female body shapes ever. So, I think it deserves its own post and celebration. I felt inspired to make this post after I got an interesting question from a reader Kevin. The reader asked my opinion on complimenting a woman’s figure and body image. The thing is that he met a beautiful lady who was blessed with an hourglass body shape. Finally he commented that she had a “nice, full, hourglass figure” and also added “healthy”. The compliment sounded perfect in his mind and he thought she would take it as a compliment as well. But, instead, an hourglass-lady got deeply offended and slapped him in the face saying “Oh really….well perhaps I should do some plus size modeling!” He said that lady had large bust, narrow waist, shapely hips/legs, in other words, the classic figure of a 50’s pinup. It looks like that lady had interpreted “hourglass” as overweight, full and big figured. But, in fact, Kevin meant her figure was shapely, beautiful and well-proportioned.
Unfortunately, media and fashion industry strongly and negatively influence women’s minds making them think that their shapes and figures are not ideal and should be changed. Because of modern fashion standards and weight-loss media ads, some women tend to think that an hourglass figure and “curvy” are synonymous to overweight, big and fat. However, the fact is that a perfectly sculpted, fit and toned hourglass figure is not a shame and synonymous to overweight, big and fat – it is a figure to be proud of, and a turn-on for many men.
Now let’s define what an hourglass figure is all about, actually. An hourglass figure (also known as a guitar or violin, but not as pronounced, of course) is a silhouette which resembles an hourglass – which is wider at the top and bottom and narrow in the middle. Women with hourglass figures have round hips and relatively large busts which come in impressive contrast with a well-defined, narrow waist. Basically, bust and hips must be almost equal, but waist must be about 9-10 inches less diameter than the top and bottom.

The main thing that I want to emphasize is that an hourglass figure is mostly about the body shape and contours, NOT THE WEIGHT. A woman can be big and hourglass-shaped, and she can be small and thin and hourglass-shaped.
In fact, wide hips, large breasts and narrow waist in a woman have historically been considered a classical female body shape and sign of femininity. Large breasts and wide hips physically differentiate women from men, who are supposed to have narrow hips and ‘no boobs’, of course.
In medical sense, the hourglass figure is often considered to be a “healthy” female figure as it is believed that women with fairly large breasts and wide hips have a higher reproductive potential and higher level of female hormone estrogen. Although this is a VERY controversial issue, there is an opinion that a woman will have an easier childbirth if she has wide hips. OF COURSE it does not mean that a woman with smaller hips will not. There are a lot of women who are not hourglasses or have the “athletic” body type, but they look very feminine, beautiful and give birth to lovely healthy babies.
Fortunately, it seems to me the female hourglass figure or “curvy” figure comes back to up-to-date fashion and cover pages of modern magazines. It was a number of different polls and surveys asking people to vote for best female celebrity bodies, sexiest celebrity bodies, most desirable celebrity bodies. And you know what? Super curvaceous beauties like Kelly Brook, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lopez topped the lists.
BBC once published study results showing that women with hourglass figures are more likely to become pregnant as they have the high reproductive potential and higher hormone levels. It was found that women with large breasts and narrow waist have higher levels of reproductive hormone estradiol than women with other body shapes. Again, whatever the study shows – the results are still controversial, in my opinion.
Let me repeat myself and say it one more time that perfectly sculpted and toned hourglass figure IS attractive and sexy. The hourglass figure is not a shame, it is a figure to be proud of. Dear hourglass-shaped ladies, show proudly your greatest treasure – your curves, waistline, bust, hips and butt.
One of my favorite quotes comes to mind: “A woman may develop wrinkles and cellulite, lose her waistline, her bustline, her ability to bear a child, even her sense of humor, but none of that implies a loss of her sexuality, her femininity.” The main thing about women’s figures is: whatever your figure and essets – do believe that you are the most beautiful and sexiest woman alive. Self-confidence, “feminine” behavior and appearance, and a well-timed smile give you true beauty. Of course, the above-mentioned is not an excuse to eat more cakes ;)
Dear men, remember – you do not love your woman because she is beautiful, she is beautiful because you love her…
See you as soon as possible ;)
